In “The Week That Fell Sadly Short”, Benjamin Steer and Matthew Turk of the Schneed Collective explore how censorship can draw the eye just as easily as a fluorescent marker.
The piece gives a conspiratorial air with a sprinkling of whimsy and an unseen gesture towards some greater message. It dares us to make our own assumptions of the enigmatic content, pulling our attention every which way with question after question. Who are Baaaat and Arnie? What happened to Mondy? The title of the piece itself is a censored acrostic for the days of the week, hinting at the obfuscation of Monday.
The redactions instill the piece with ambiguity, leaving us stumbling through each paragraph in staccato as unwilling subjects to our minds’ conjurations. We are left to wonder what we may have missed, and whether our interpretations align with the machinations of the redactor, for better or for worse.
